Book Database: America America

America America by Ethan CaninI just finished reading America America by Ethan Canin over the weekend. For the full review, including spoilers, please see the entry in the some smart book database. However, for those who haven't read the book yet, here is an excerpt of my thoughts:

It is by far one of the best books I have read in the last year, with deeply nuanced characters, wonderful imagery, and interesting insights to share. Anyone who enjoyed A Prayer For Owen Meany should read this book as well. I recommend this without hesitation or qualification.

And here is what I selected as my favorite quote of the book (something that was particularly difficult for this book, as there were so many great quotes to choose from):

“After all, if children don’t make you see things differently – first bringing them into the world and then watching them go out into it – then God help you” (6).

Some smart book database

Most of my recent efforts in the website/blogging arena have been focused on the new some smart book database. However, as much as I do update it (and I think 22 books since last December is pretty good!), it is extremely limited in terms of audience. After all, you should only read an entry on a book if you have already read the book.

So, in addition to using this space for normal blogging, I will also be using it to post short, spoiler free reviews and updates on the books I am reading in order to give you an idea of it's your kind of book, without having the whole thing spoiled.

I'm nearing completion on America America at the moment, so expect something soon.
