Yeah there’s actually zero magic at all. I kept expecting it, and it wasn’t until afterwards that I realized it was completely absent. It is the first of the series, and from what I read in the interview it sounds like the sequels will be coming pretty soon.

I really do hope the sequels have a little more depth, because the idea of comedy fantasy is great, and Tallerman clearly has a good sense of humor and timing. I think if you are aware of the flaws going into it, though, it can be a fun “snack” between more serious books.

“that doesn’t rely on cheap magic tricks to get out of every sticky situation” I like the sound of that. I’m currently getting through David Eddings books, but the number of times something interesting is solved too soon by magic…

Good review. Is this the first in a series? (In which case maybe character description will improve later on).

You make me want to read it again. I think I’d like it better the second time around. However, I don’t think I’ll ever like it as much as you did; I just don’t think it’s my style in general. I do agree that it was really well done, though.

Thanks Keith! I really hope so. It’s scary to think I only have 300 words to get to the next round, though it makes sense considering the 10,000 entries.

If all else fails I’ll submit it to TOR, though I still have to get them to read past the 3 page summary!

Read it and loved it! I really hope you get to round 2 because the writing style (I’ve described it as Douglas Adams’s style meets Neil Gaiman’s imagination) is great and I’m sure if they read the first 5,000 you’ll be a shoo-in to make it to the next round!

That is so frustrating, and it seems like covers do get progressively worse as it gets further from the original edition. As though the publisher is thinking “Well the author won’t even notice, let’s make the cover as bad as possible!”

I totally agree! I first read The Goose Girl years ago, and I have loved everything about it from the first, including the beautiful mosaic style cover. Imagine my dismay when, looking to see if Hale had anything new at the bookstore, I saw the new covers! I wish she’d have stuck with the originals.

Thanks for stopping by Brendan, glad you enjoyed the synopsis. It’s been awhile since I finished Beyond the Blue Event Horizon, but I do remember some of the questions I had at the end becoming a little more clear when I finished the next book in the series. If you haven’t picked it up already, I definitely recommend it.

This is a great synopsis and I agree with the critique. I found it also strange how much the book initially focused on Paul’s perhaps obsession with Janine which was not brought up later in the book when they reunited. I also did not understand what exactly the Oldest Ones plans were and how it was killed.
