Dear Woody,
After being mildly amused by Anything Else and mostly annoyed by Hollywood Ending and The Curse of the Jade Scorpion, I began to worry that you've lost your touch. Would I ever get another great film like Manhattan, Annie Hall, or Love and Death?
(I swear, I've already added Hannah and Her Sistsers & Crimes and Misdemeanors to my Netflix queue.)
Last weekend, I went to see Match Point. Wow! You've really come back! I will admit, I don't know if I like this more than the great films I listed before, simply because this is so unlike you. Never in a million years would I think of calling this a "Woody Allen" movie. But that's not a bad thing...
You mixed genres better than I've ever seen you (or anyone) do before--Comedy, Drama, Romance, Tragedy, et al. The film is almost noir-ish as it examines how much luck plays a part in people's lives.
And you made London look beautiful. You've often cast gorgeous New York City as a supporting character in your previous films, whereas here, London was almost a cameo. I'm interested to see if the character grows in your next film.
Your use of music never ceases to amaze me. The soundtrack--made up entirely of opera--was a perfect mood setter. In addition to the live opera scenes, the recordings that contained the sound of a needle scratching out the arias increased the tension ever so slightly.
I don't know who cuts movies trailers--is it the directors? But the one for Match Point was great. I knew Scarlett was in this, but when I first saw the trailer, I couldn't name the movie... And when the title and your name came up at the end, my jaw dropped. It's wonderful that the trailer doesn't give too much of the plot away, because I'm sure the experience would have been ruined for me had I known any more than I had.
movie! Thank you!
Welcome back! Here's hoping you're back for good and good luck with your next film,
KM~
P.S. Did Brian Cox speak in an English accent? I really couldn't tell...
