I've been listening to this EP almost non-stop since I picked it up at the Toad concert two weeks ago.
I was most excited to pick this up because of the first track - "The Hole." I first heard this at a Glen Phillips's concert almost three years ago. At the time, it was brand new, without an official title. Fans had come to know it as "The Hole," however, and now it was finally released! At first, I was disappointed. The memory of the song far outperformed the song itself. In my memory, it had beautiful lyrics with a haunting melody. However, after two weeks of hearing it, it's really grown on me.
"The Innocent" is easily my favorite song out of the mix. It has a great melody with lyrics that just stay with you:
"Black Dog Beside Me" and "Let's Ruin Everything Tonight" are both good songs ("Black Dog..." my favorite of the two), but I'm not sure how well these will work live. The song is mostly just Glen's voice, a drum, a piano, and one of those gourds with all the beads over it (kind of like an inside-out maraca). Not sure how either song will sound with just Glen and a guitar.
"Revelator" is a Gillian Welch cover. "Chapel Perilous" is dark and somber. "Brain Trust Kid" is a quiet song that reminds me of a slightly more mellow Fountains of Wayne.
